Northings House
Find a new kind of stay in the Sacramento Mountains

The quiet presence of Northings House is just as moving as the nature that surrounds it. The home is refreshingly simple and thoughtfully furnished. Subdued by design to give your mind the space to notice the little things. Perhaps it’s the way the skylights change the home throughout the day. Maybe it’s the memory that comes flooding back at the site of one of the old pieces of furniture. Or it could just be the realization that you have been sitting quietly thinking of nothing at all.
About Us

Northings and eastings are survey coordinates used to pinpoint a location on a flat grid, providing precise positioning on a map. We chose the name Northings House to emphasize the importance of place and the thoughtful way the house is sited within the landscape.
Our Story
We’ve been coming to New Mexico for years, drawn to the mountains and the high-elevation escape they offer from Central Texas, and always looking for an architecturally interesting, design-forward house to rent. We’d never found anything quite like this one. In 2026, during our anniversary trip to Cloudcroft, we took a day trip to White Sands and noticed this steel house perched on the side of the canyon. We discovered it was for sale and, on a whim, decided to take a look. Its open-plan design, organized around a central core, reminded us of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s Farnsworth House. We fell for the architecture, the landscape, and the small-town character of the Alamogordo, Cloudcroft, and Ruidoso area. It felt like this part of the Lincoln National Forest and Sacramento Mountains could be just as special as the places people often seek out in the Southwest, like Marfa and the Davis Mountains.

The House
Generous windows and glass doors throughout the home blur the boundary between indoors and out, bringing the breathtaking mountain landscape into view from nearly every room. The 12' ceilings, airy open-plan layout, and abundant natural light reinforce that connection. Thoughtfully designed interiors pair clean, modern forms with a curated collection of vintage and antique pieces, from distinctive curios to one-of-a-kind finds. Sleeping spaces are intentionally defined without traditional walls, using elegant privacy curtains that can be drawn when desired. Sleeping accommodations include a king bed, a queen bed, and a queen Murphy bed.

Spacious decks extend the living space outdoors, offering even more ways to take in the surrounding scenery. This is more than just a place to stay; it’s an experience all its own.

King Bedroom
The king bedroom sits just off the dining room and opens to a cozy seating area overlooking the landscape through double sliding glass doors. A record player and a selection of vinyl make this a relaxing spot to wake up slowly or unwind at the end of the day.

Queen Bedroom
The queen bedroom sits just off the living room, with a privacy curtain that can be drawn to create a separate sleeping space or opened to connect it with the living area. A rolling TV stand lets you watch from bed or from the living room, depending on how you want to use the space.

Murphy Bed
The queen Murphy bed is tucked into the living room near the main entry, making it an especially fun sleeping space for kids. With the privacy curtain to the adjacent queen bedroom pulled back, both sleeping spaces and the TV become one shared, social kids’ zone.
